The Ruhr-University Bochum - Institute for Social Movements - invites applications for the position of an Assistant Professor (W1) in "Globalization Conflicts, Work, and Social Movements" to start on 1 February 2013.

W1-Professors are temporary positions of three years in the first instance. The position can be extended to another three years following a positive evaluation.

The Institute for Social Movements is a central research unit of the RUB. The Institute is specialized in research and teaching on social movements in the past and present (for detailed information see http://www.isb.ruhr-uni-bochum.de).

The future holder of the post will represent the subject of "Globalization Conflicts, Work and Social Movements" in research and teaching with the focus on the social science based analysis of current global and transnational linkages between social movements.

A doctoral degree of outstanding quality, preferably in the social or political sciences, is required as is a strong publication record. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than five years ago. Evidence of special aptitude for academic teaching is just as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB and to get involved generally in university processes according to the RUB's mission statement. We expect also the willingness to participate in the bodies of the Institute for Social Movements.

We expect further more:

  1. Willingness and ability to attract external funding.
  2. Readiness to participate in interdisciplinary academic work, especially to cooperate closely with historians of social movements.
  3. High commitment in teaching.
